This was me. This was a performance in the final Gala before I received the trophy for World Champion of Card Magic. What people don’t know, and I thought it might be interesting to share, is that this routine (here edited by the TV Production company and not fully displayed) was quite controversial at the time. Not only it fooled the big majority of the magicians that were attending the convention but also part of the judging panel, composed by renowned magicians and that most didn’t know who I was. They thought that the person helping me was a stooge. And, if that was the case, I needed to be disqualified from the possibility of getting that award, and the title. Not many times in the history of magic this happened, but there was a precedent with the great Lennart Green, that in 1988 fooled everyone due to his unique strategies and techniques, and without any questions, was disqualified. Three years later, after that injustice, he came back as was crowned World Champion of Card Magic. In my case, there were two people in the jury panel that knew my work from before and knew that I would not use such a low tactic ever. Those were Camilo Vazquez and Roberto Giobbi, that have known me since I was probably 8, and 11 years old respectively. But, because there is never a certainty with these things, and not wanting to make the same past mistake, the judging panel nominated a representative of the FISM committee, sir Gerrit Brengman, to talk with me about this matter.
I still remember this conversation, like it was today. Gerrit Brengman explained to me that I had a good score but that some judges wanted to disqualify me because they couldn’t figure out how I achieved what I achieved. And that I had two options: one, I could trust him my with my secret, and he would let the judges know that it was indeed not a stooge. Or, I wasn’t forced to explain anything, but my score would suffer from that. Not many people knew or know today the secret of my act, maybe a handful of magic friends. But once magicians (and some lay-audiences) are faced with uncertainty, the easy way out is to assume it was a stooge. So, I made a decision of adding Gerrit Brengman to the shortlist of people with whom I shared the secrets behind the full act. I went into detail about how certain moments were accomplished and even invite him to witness the backstage perspective. He knew at the time and still knows, the amount of thought that went into developed those impossible moments I wanted to perform, and that none of them was accomplished with a stooge, for me the lowest of all "methods" in magic on par with camera tricks. He went over to the judging panel, and guarantee them that the performance was legit and that my score should not be affected.
On August 6th, 2006, I had to repeat that same act with only 23 years, 8 months, and 21 days in front of the biggest crowd of magicians that I have ever performed for. This time, the judging panel decided who would be the spectator to interact with me on stage, to guarantee she wasn't a stooge. This is me, on that day, performing that act again. In the end, I received a standing ovation and also the title of World Champion of Card Magic, becoming the youngest ever to receive that award. I still love this act, and it holds such a special place in my heart. It represents 6 years of working towards one specific goal. Today, I understand that every second studying magic during those 6 years counted for all those things I have done since there and that, hopefully, I’ll keep doing in the future.
The way we choose to spend our time affects the outcome of certain events in our lives, and the only people that will never understand are the ones that are not willing to spend that time to create something unique and personal. That honest approach to the work is the quality I most admire in my peers and in other artists I follow. Without that commitment, any work rendered is pointless. This was me, without life experience, expressing an ideal of life I had at the time and that I believed in. Today, I still believe in it. It is good to be reminded that, although I would probably not dress like in the video again, I am still the same person I was. So much changed in my life since that moment till today, but knowing your roots is always a good way of keeping your soul intact. I am not an exoterical person, but I do believe that the universe balances things out and that if you put something positive you will be rewarded in much more than just money. On that day, the real reward was not the title of World Champion of Card Magic. It was seeing my all-time magic idol Juan Tamariz, the person that made me want to be a professional magician who also was a World Champion of Card Magic, walk towards me in the middle of a sea of people and expressing his sincere congratulations for my act. Life is beautiful.
